    Steinhatchee Fishing Report 3/6/04
Next Saturday is the Steinhatchee Community Fishing Tournament! Click HERE for Details! The weather has been so bad that the playing field for this tournament should be rather even keeping the ol' everyday steady fisherman from checking out his favorite holes. And remember, the last year's Optimist Club top winners were all women. So bring your spouse and give her your best rig! All proceeds go to the the Steinhatchee Projects Board - a non-profit organization to improve Steinhatchee including items such as school scholarships, park improvements, etc. So help our our community! Plus there are lots of great raffle prizes as well for just a $1.00 a ticket. Win coolers, fishing poles, oil, etc. or even a two nite stay in Sea Hag Marina's Mermaid Cove (click here to check it out). The marina will be open Friday night until 9:00pm or 10:00pm so that you can buy your tickets before the am rush. I suspect we will be opening the store the morning of the tournament at 5:30ish.
Sheepshead are starting to fire up at the Steinhatchee Reef!
I'm trying to get some pictures.....
The Grouper fishing continues to be great!

    Trolling for Grouper
Most Grouper fishermen punch in their GPS numbers and make a beeline to their favorite bottom fishing spot. These fishermen primarily drop the jug, anchor up, and drop a cigar minnow or sardine down on the bottom. But with all the GPS numbers now being published on charts and on the internet, often times a hot spot is already taken by another boat. But there's another time proven way to catch grouper. It's called trolling, and March is a perfect month for trying it out and finding new hot spots for Grouper.

March is great for trolling because Grouper are still on the move from the spawning season. The fish move from the shallow waters (25 to 35 foot depths) back out to the (55 to 65 foot depths). Trolling in these areas will produce new GPS numbers for future fishing trips. The most popular technique for finding good grouper bottoms plotting an area between two existing hot spots then troll until you get a strike. When you do, throw a jug to mark that spot. You can then continue to troll over the area and view the relief through your bottom machine.

Sea Hag Marina’s charter boat “Miss Chaeli” main trolling setup is a medium to stiff Star Rod with a Penn 320GT2 Level Wind reel lined with a base of monofilament topped with Power Pro 65lb. Test braid, a Stabor line lock swivel and finally a Mann’s Stretch 30+ lure. The drag should be set so that is slips with around 15-20# of pressure (a hard hand pull). Troll speeds are best between 4-6 knots.

Some other popular trolling rigs are planer rigs, frozen baits, and other trolling lures. A popular planer rig uses a size #2 or #3 planer with a large Huntington Drone spoon. Frozen baits such as ballyhoo or mullet are popular with planers too. Other good Grouper trolling lures from Mann’s are the new Jointed Stretch 30+, the new Magnum Stretch 40+, the Stretch 50+, the Magnum Manniac. Other manufacturers are MegaBait’s MegaDiver 30+, Rapala’s Cd26 Magnum, and Xxtreme Fishing Adventure’s Plus Thirty lure.
